Did you know that April is Rosacea Awareness Month?

Last April, I wrote a post outlining the symptoms of rosacea and a sample rosacea skin routine. You can have a read of that here. Today, I will chat about some rosacea triggers.

What triggers my rosacea flare-up’s?

There are a number of factors that can exacerbate rosacea. Some of the common rosacea triggers include: sunlight, weather changes, cold/heat, humidity, heavy exercise, stress, alcohol, spicy foods, menstruation changes, certain foods or certain skin products.
Rosacea triggers are very individual and will vary from person to person.

How do I know what is causing my rosacea to flare-up?

Identifying your rosacea trigger factors can go a long way in helping you manage and control your condition.

To do this, I recommend you keep a diary, book a skin consultation and consider a food intolerance test.

Keeping A skincare DIARY

Write down little notes each day, keeping in mind some of the rosacea triggers I mentioned above. For example, some things you might take note of are eating spicy foods, days you drink alcohol, when you feel stressed, your menstrual cycle etc. Even little notes help.

After a while, you might start to notice a correlation between certain things you do/eat and days that your rosacea is bad. Once you identify what affects you it is easy to cut down or avoid it!

A food intolerance test can often be beneficial to help you identify some food triggers.

Lifestyle tips for Managing your rosacea

The following are also some general lifestyle tips for managing rosacea:

Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated internally.

Aim to stick to fresh, non-processed foods.

Cut down on sugary foods.

Eat lots of vegetables.

Ensure you get enough fibre in your diet.

If you think foods are affecting your rosacea, try a food intolerance test.

Manage stress – Stress is a huge trigger for rosacea. It is something that plays a part in all our lives at some point. I know it’s not always easy to simply avoid it. However, you can learn to cope with and manage stress more efficiently. Try scheduling time into your week for you. Make time for yoga, walking or reading.

If you would like some help with managing your rosacea then book a skin consultation with me and we can chat.

I hope this helped!

What is the best treatment for rosacea?

When treating rosacea, I tend to prefer a combination-approach including some or all of the following.

A good at-home skin routine – A skin consultation will help you get on a good daily skin routine for rosacea management.

Some skin treatments – possibly some skin peels

Trigger avoidance

Food Intolerance Testing – If you are doing step 1-3 with no major results then you may consider looking into food intolerances. Something you are eating may be causing inflammation. You can read more information on intolerance testing here.

Oral/topical medications, if necessary

There are various stages and subtypes of rosacea. So, rosacea treatment will depend on the stage and severity of your condition.

What are The Best Skin products for rosacea?

Don’t shy away from skin products and make-up. Many people fear that these will cause a flare-up. However, once you use appropriate products to suit, you should have no trouble!

If you are just starting out with a skin routine, focus on gentle, hydrating skin products. Try not to introduce to many new products or ingredients at once. Also, if you have a very reactive skin, consider patch testing the product on a small area of skin before applying to the whole face. Your goal is to strengthen, repair and hydrate the skin.

My top 3 skin products for rosacea:

1. Cleanse: All good skincare starts with good cleansing. Opt for a gentle cleanser with hydrating ingredients. Use twice a day.
2. Vitamin C – Anti-inflammatory, anti-redness, anti-ageing, the list of skin benefits with Vitamin C is endless! Try introducing a Vitamin C antioxidant serum in the morning.
3. Broad spectrum SPF – Sunlight is one of the biggest triggers for rosacea. When possible, try to avoid too much sun exposure. Use a moisturiser with added SPF every morning.

Once you have repaired the skin barrier, with the steps above, you can introduce some active skin products to get good results with rosacea treatment.

I hope this helped. As always, if you have any questions on rosacea or skin products feel free to get in contact or book a skin consultation.
